In short: an impact sliding glass door replaces the lanai or pool slider with a heavier frame and laminated impact glass that stays in place if it is struck. A two-panel door typically costs $3,500–$7,000 installed in Cape Coral, and wider three- and four-panel doors $6,500–$13,000. It needs a city permit, which we file.
Why the slider matters most
A typical Cape pool home has one opening that is bigger than any two windows combined: the slider from the living area to the lanai. On canal lots it usually faces the water, which is also the side with the least to slow the wind down. If that door fails in a storm, wind pressure enters the house and pushes up on the roof from inside. That is why wind-mitigation inspectors look closely at sliders, and why a house with impact windows but an unprotected slider does not count as fully protected.
Panel layouts
- Two panels (XO or OX). One fixed, one sliding, usually 6 to 8 feet wide. The standard on smaller homes and condos.
- Three and four panels. 9 to 16 feet, with one or two operable panels. Common on the larger canal homes.
- Stacking. Several panels slide behind one another to open most of the wall to the lanai.
- Pocket. Panels disappear into the wall. Usually only possible where the wall was framed for it, so it is mainly a new-build option.
Ratings worth reading on the quote
Every impact door we quote comes with a Florida Product Approval listing the design pressures it is approved for, positive and negative, and a water-resistance rating. Openings on the water side of the house, or on two-story homes, may need a higher rating than a slider tucked under a deep lanai roof. We work out what your opening requires and show the product's rating beside it, so you are not paying for more door than the opening needs or getting less than it should have.
Living with an impact slider
Impact panels are heavier than the old ones, so the rollers and track matter. Keep the track clear of sand and pool grit, and rinse the frame now and then if you are near salt water. Most impact doors lock at more than one point, and many owners notice the house is quieter and the living room cooler once the old door is gone. Screens are separate and can be ordered with the door.
The install
The old door usually comes out and the new one goes in on the same day. The sill is bedded in sealant, the frame anchored into the block and header at the spacing its approval requires, and the inside trim and outside stucco finished around it. After the city inspection you receive the product approval to file with your wind-mitigation paperwork. Pricing for every door size is in the Cape Coral impact window price guide.
Slider questions
How much does an impact sliding glass door cost in Cape Coral?
A two-panel, roughly 8-foot impact slider typically runs $3,500 to $7,000 installed. Three- and four-panel doors for wide lanai openings run $6,500 to $13,000, more for stacking or pocket configurations. These are estimates; we price your opening after measuring it.
Will a new slider keep water out in sideways rain?
A new door with a properly sealed sill keeps out far more than a worn 30-year-old one, but every slider has a water-resistance rating, and higher-rated doors cost more. On exposed canal-facing openings we recommend a higher design pressure and water rating, and we show you the numbers on the quote.
Can you keep the same opening size?
Usually. Impact sliders are made to order, so we match the existing rough opening as closely as the product allows. Where the frame profile is deeper, the inside trim is adjusted rather than the wall.
