A tall bronze-finish front door with glass sidelights on both sides

In short: impact doors are entry, sidelight and French doors whose frames, hardware and glass are tested together to stay in the opening during a hurricane. In Cape Coral an impact front door typically costs $2,800–$5,500 installed, and a pair of French doors $5,000–$9,500. Each one carries a Florida Product Approval and is installed under a city permit.

Why doors count as much as windows

Wind-mitigation inspections grade the whole house on its weakest protected opening. A home with impact glass in every window but an old front door with a decorative glass insert is rated as if it had no protection at all. Doors also take a different kind of load from windows: a door has to resist wind pushing in and suction pulling out at the latch side and hinges, which is why the hardware is part of the approval, not an accessory.

The doors we install

  • Front entry doors. Fiberglass or aluminum skins with an impact glass insert, or solid, in finishes from smooth paintable to wood grain.
  • Entry with sidelights or a transom. One or two narrow impact panels beside the door, common on Cape homes built from the 1990s on.
  • French doors. Hinged pairs, usually opening to the lanai or pool deck on homes where a slider was never fitted.
  • Side and garage-entry doors. The service door into the garage is an opening too, and often the forgotten one.

Choosing the door

Fiberglass holds up well to humidity and does not rust or rot, which makes it the usual choice here. Aluminum is lighter and suits contemporary designs. For glass, privacy textures and laminated decorative glass are available in impact versions, so you do not have to give up the look of a glass front door. Multi-point locks are standard on many impact doors and draw the door tight to the frame along its height. Ask us about outswing versus inswing at the measure; it depends on the step, the porch and the swing room inside.

Fitting the opening you have

Older Cape homes often have door openings that are not quite standard sizes, and replacement doors are made to order. We measure the rough opening, check the threshold and slab for level, and note how the new frame will meet the stucco and the floor inside. The old door and frame come out, the new unit is anchored into the block and header, sealed and trimmed, and the hardware is adjusted until the door closes cleanly. A single door is usually a one-day job.

What it costs

A single impact entry door runs $2,800 to $5,500 installed, an entry with sidelights $4,500 to $9,000 and a pair of French doors $5,000 to $9,500. Decorative glass, finishes and hardware move the figure within those ranges. All door and window prices are set out in the Cape Coral price guide; your written quote after the measure is the figure to go by.

Door questions

What does an impact front door cost in Cape Coral?

A single impact entry door usually runs $2,800 to $5,500 installed, depending on the material, glass and hardware. Adding sidelights brings it to about $4,500 to $9,000. A pair of impact French doors runs $5,000 to $9,500. These are estimates until we have measured.

Does a front door without glass need to be impact rated?

A solid door still has to meet the wind pressure rating for its location, and for wind-mitigation credit the inspector wants every opening, doors included, to be protected or rated. A door with any glass in it needs impact-rated glazing or a shutter.

Should an outswing or inswing door be used?

Outswing doors press against their frame under wind load, which helps them resist pressure, so they are common on Florida coastal homes. Inswing doors are still available with the right rating. We go through the trade-offs, including how the door meets your porch or step, at the measure.
